BSDA to adopt new name and new focus

SURREY, B.C. — The association that serves British Columbia's building supply dealers wants a new name and has applied to the necessary government authorities to get it. "The industry has become so broad that for us to continue to operate solely as a group of building supply dealers becomes counterproductive," says George Tracy, president of  the BSDA of B.C. Under a new moniker, the Building Supply Industry Association of B.C., or BSIA, the association is seeking to broaden its reach. "Our industry is experiencing change at an accelerating rate, which causes all of us to wonder what is next. There are amalgamations, consolidations, big boxes, new players, and losses of old established firms," Tracy notes. The association intends to accommodate that change. Among the groups Tracy hopes to attract are gypsum supply dealers and other commercial operators. "For example, we're talking to a company that sells only roofing products at retail," he says. The change was initiated by the association's board at its recent annual general meeting. Final government approval for the change from the Registrar of Companies for the Province of British Columbia is expected to come through in a matter of weeks. "If we want to stay current, we'd better keep up with our market," Tracy says. "The board of directors has been working on a direction for the association so it will serve the membership well into the future."

Home Depot's store cleanup is paying dividends

TORONTO — Home Depot invites feedback from its customers on every single sales receipt, and the response to store clutter is overwhelming. "Customers hate clutter, they don't like stuff in the aisles, and hate when they can't get through the store," said Gino DiGioacchino, vice-president merchandising for Home Depot Canada, speaking recently at a breakfast meeting held by the Canadian Hardware and Housewares Manufacturers Association. Using customer feedback, Home Depot has been cleaning up its stores and refreshing its merchandise presentations — a chain-wide directive for all its stores that came all the way from Atlanta. "It's so simple," says Digioacchino. "It's the basis of retail, but sometimes we lose focus on where we're going." Home Depot's new store in Mississauga, Ont., which opened last fall, features the new cleaned-up approach, and another 15 stores have had makeovers. Over the past four months since the cleanup was initiated, the results have been rapid — and dramatic. Same-store sales have increased by as much as 50% across all categories. "I guarantee our sales will increase 10-12% and it's happening as we clear the aisles," DiGioacchino says.

ADMACQ chosen 2007 Association of the Year

LONGUEUIL, Que. — The Building Materials Retailers Association of Quebec (ADMACQ) has been awarded the 2007 Association of the Year Award by the Canadian Society of Association Executives (CSAE). In accepting the award in Montreal last week, ADMACQ's president and general manager, Donald O'Hara, noted the honour came during the same year as the 50th anniversary of the association's magazine, Quart de Rond. "As ADMACQ itself will soon turn 70, I am delighted to notice the road we have travelled through the years. I want to share this award with my colleagues and, also with my predecessors," said O'Hara. Last year was a busy year for ADMACQ, which has over 800 member-dealers and member-vendors. In addition to its regular activities, the association published the third annual Renovex ADMACQ Index — a quarterly study on the renovation and DIY habits of Quebec's consumers —  forged a publishing partnership with HARDLINES to produce a French-language edition, and oversaw a major overhaul of Quart de Rond magazine.
